In the novel Shampoo Planet, loneliness is one of the major factors that affect the two generations in different ways.

Tyler, the protagonist of the novel, depicted the effects of loneliness. He filled his void by travelling to various places.

I sit on the steps in the heat of the sun and listen as one by one these car alarms extinguish themselves until once more only the muted roar of the city is audible, and the city, bathed in sunlight, once again resumes dreaming its collective dream. Cars roll down the city’s roads, plants grow from its soil, wealth is generated in its rooms, hope is created and lost and recreated in the minds and souls of its inhabitants, and the city continues its dream and searches for those ideas that will make it strong

However, even travelling doesn’t completely fill his void. He quote;

The next day I was planning to change my ticket and jet home.

Tyler travels to look for a new beginning to replace and forget about his lonely past. However, the loneliness has already become a part of his mind, body and soul. Because no matter where he was, he was always still miserable. However one cannot look for happiness when the past isn’t fixed. The loneliness must be dealt with. Relatable to this world, thousands of people daily are suffering from loneliness. Some may show it, others may not. In some ways, people fill their void by travelling. In the hopes of finding a new beginning, and the hope for the loneliness to be gone forever. However, one cannot run away from loneliness.

Also seen in the book, Jasmine, the mother of Tyler, showed evidence of loneliness;

I am going to give you a piece of advice…advice I wish I’d been told in guidance class back in high school, in between the don’t-do-acid and don’t-drink-and-drive films. I wish our counselors had told us, ‘When you grow older a dreadful, horrible sensation will come over you. It’s called loneliness, and you think you know what it is now, but you don’t. Here is the list of the symptoms, and don’t worry—loneliness is the most universal sensation on the planet. Just remember one fact—loneliness will pass. You will survive and you will be a better human for it.”

She, however, does not travel to fill her void. She instead seeks for love in various men at different times. She was possibly looking for the “perfect” man to take her loneliness away.

The only payback for all of this - for the conversion of their once-young hearts into tar - will be that you will love your friends more, even though they have made you see the universe as an emptier and scarier place - and they will love you more, too.”
